Born and raised in the Đồng Tháp Mười resistance zone, Ca Lê Thắng relocated with his family to Hanoi in 1955 following the Geneva Accords. His childhood, marked by dislocation and upheaval, remains deeply intertwined with the imagery of floodwaters slowly swallowing the land during the floating season. This inexorable rise of water transformed the landscape overnight into a boundless expanse of motion and reflection—a phenomenon as overwhelming as it is poetic.
For Ca Lê Thắng, the floating season is not a subject but a vessel of memory, a fluid repository of recollection where the boundaries between land, water, and sky dissolve into fields of color. It is within this metaphorical space that he reconciles with the specters of war, soothes his yearning for home, and endures the scars of personal loss. His art, rooted in this imagery, emerges not as a declaration but as an invitation to witness memory’s transformation into form.
